Setting up your own artist led project , award or exhibition is a rewarding and challenging experience. It can be a way of creating a peer network as well as building your profile as an artist and leading to sustainable jobs in the art world.
We discuss with 3 highly successful artist led projects the practicalities of setting up your own project , what you should consider, the highs and lows, insights into applying for funding for your projects and how to make a success through the marketing and promotion of your project.
Sarah Rowles
Sarah Rowles is a recent graduate of Goldsmiths and director of Q-Art London, a forum for students, graduates and self-trained artists from across London. Q-Art breaks down the barriers between various art schools, their departments and levels of study, allowing a crossing of perspectives, and providing a place where graduates can continue to present and critically discuss work in a familiar and supportive environment. Through its programme and publications Q-Art opens up the systems of both art evaluation and HE level art education to a wider audience.
Sarah also works as an artist educator at Cubitt gallery and as paid intern at Peckham Space, Camberwell College of Arts.

.
Utrophia’s space encompasses films, installation, art and music ( with bands from all over the world invited to play throughout the years ) Utrophia now hold an annual festival, a public art program, flourishing website and in house improv workshops.
Utrophia is a movable mission, philosophical movement and project, beginning initially in Greenwich, then 291 Gallery in Hackney before returning to several locations in the South East, finally arriving back (ironically) in the defunct job centre in the heart of their beloved Deptford in 2011.
